Addition functions of the skin include allowing the sensation of such things as temperature, touch, and pressure. It also reflects a person’s physical state, wellness, and mood to other people.

In order to perform all these functions, skin must be kept healthy. A big part of that is keeping it clean. Skin cells naturally die, leaving room for new skin cells to emerge. However, if dead skin is left on the surface, it can mix with the natural secretions of the skin. This leaves a filthy layer on the surface of the skin which fosters the development of pathogenic organisms. As a result, the natural functions of the skin are disrupted in a variety of ways. Skin becomes more easily damaged and less antibacterial compounds are released. This means that dirty skin becomes more and more likely to develop infections.

Many people incorporate some amount of skin care into their daily routines. For most people, it is as important as getting dressed for the day.
