What You Need to Know About Self Tanning

Sunless tanning products are simply the safest way to achieve a
tan and are definitely the best alternative for those who burn easily.
You may want to try several sunless tanning products to see which
one works best with your own skin and coloring. Trust me on this,
I had a terrible and embarrassing experience the first time I tried
a sunless tanning product.
The better quality self tanning products whether in cream, gel
or spray form are made with the same active ingredient which stimulates
pigment in the skin rather than dying it. These better quality products
offer a natural looking tan, not orangey, that is more complimentary
to your own coloring. Opt for a product that is hypoallergenic and
also acts as a moisturizer. These products won't block pores or
irritate sensitive skin.
Sunless tanning products require some training when it comes to
the application process.
Follow these steps for best results:
- Test the product on an unexposed area, like your inner wrists
or somewhere on your arm, to see how your skin reacts to it. Patch
testing while you're in a store will give you an indication of
the expected outcome. You can also ask for samples so you can
try different brands at home.
- Once you've chosen your self tanner, wash and exfoliate your
face and body thoroughly before applying the product. This will
wash away any dead skin which otherwise would make the tan uneven
and blotchy. Concentrate on areas that are prone to excessive
dryness like your elbows and knees. It is also helpful to moisturize
your elbows, knees and ankle bones before application as well.
- Once your face and body are dry, it’s time apply your
sunless tanning product. On your face apply it very lightly and
then perhaps more heavily on the upper cheeks, forehead and nose,
which will give the effect of a natural tan. On your body, apply
the self-tanner by rubbing it onto your skin in circular motions
(rather than up and down), and use less tanner or none at all
on your elbows, knees and ankle bones. I also suggest avoiding
the feet if you can or just brush the tops. Depending on the product,
you may have to re-apply several times at first in order to get
your desired level of tan.
- Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly during and after application
since sunless tanning products can stain the palms of your hands
which, trust me, looks awful. Better yet, use latex gloves when
applying the product. It took me a while before figuring this
out.
- Don't get dressed for at least 15 minutes after applying the
product, although some products don’t require you to wait.
I suggest doing it in the evening so that you can go to bed and
wake up with a tan. It will take most products two to five hours
in order to see the full effect.
